During my research on black vernacular por- traiture and a close study of my family album I noticed something interesting. I bare- ly saw any smiles in group portraits. Every- one looked so robust and poised, as though they were almost uninterested but that also resonated with me in a different way. On the other hand I felt a sense of opulence. A sense of calmness and collectedness. This photograph is a remark of that observation, hence the title “Don’t Say Cheese” which is a rebuttal to the phrase “Say Cheese”; a phrase photographers would usually say to get their subjects to smile.
