Ramón Masats / Visit Spain Exhibition

General Archive of the Region of Murcia, Spain, from May 9 to September 13, 2024.

The exhibition of Ramón Masats, displayed at the General Archive of the Region of Murcia, captures the journey the photographer undertook between 1955 and 1965, traveling through the geography of Spain with his camera. His personal obsession was to portray the stereotypes with which the official culture blessed the patriotic values of this era characterized by the end of autarky in the Francoist dictatorship, the opening designed by the government with the creation of the Ministry of Information and Tourism (1951), and the National Tourism Plan (1953).

Among folk rituals, traditional customs, and religious practices, this artist, awarded the National Photography Prize in 2004, documents and portrays the reality of a country trapped in material poverty, socially constrained, and staunchly bound in its spiritual ties. In this way, Masats' personality constructs a suggestion beyond the mere optical reality of the photographic image, leaving the final interpretation in the hands of the visitor.
